Check Your Fridge: Recalled Eggs Linked to Salmonella Contamination in 9 States

65 cases of Salmonella have since been reported as the FDA continues its investigation.

If you recently purchased a carton of eggs, you better check your refrigerator. The CDC and U.S. Food & Drug Administration both recently released a recall notice saying that Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market branded eggs are being recalled due to potentially being contaminated with Salmonella.

The announcement states that this recall includes all types of eggs, such as “conventional cage-free, organic, and non-GMO chicken eggs.”

The recalled eggs were distributed to retailers and food service locations in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. And according to the FDA, there have since been “65 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella” across nine states, including California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Illnesses from this particular recall started between May 23, 2024, and August 10, 2024. No deaths have been reported, but 24 of these cases required hospitalization.

The FDA says all expiration dates are part of this recall for any carton sizes (M, L, XL, Jumbo) that come from Milo's Poultry Farms, LLC in Bonduel, Wisconsin. These can include eggs from the Tony’s Fresh Market and Milo's Poultry Farms brands.

The recall was first initiated after the FDA learned that these “environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria” and later found that these “samples were related to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation.”

Salmonella symptoms typically occur within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and can last up to seven days. These symptoms can include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. More severe cases can occur in children under the age of five, people with weakened immune systems, and the elderly.

The FDA urges anyone who purchased these eggs to not consume them and throw them out immediately. It is also recommended to “carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers” that these eggs might have touched to “reduce the risk of cross-contamination”.
