Bobs are the haircut of the summer, and Lily Collins is joining in on the fun.

Hard launching the new look on Instagram, Collins and her stylist Jacob Schwartz debuted the shiny, dark suede brunette color just in time for the actresses’ new movie MaXXXine. A stark departure from her previous long and luscious locks, the new bob was accompanied with the caption, “new hair era unlocked.”

Collins isn’t the only celeb to undergo a major color and length transformation, either. Kylie Jenner recently showcased a Marilyn Monroe-style bob on her Instagram and Sydney Sweeney rocked a similar style on the Met Gala red carpet. Not to mention, it totally emulates the ‘French Girl’ style that is totally trending and very in theme with Collins’ Emily in Paris character.

Want to emulate her rich, expensive-looking dark brown bob? Read on below to learn exactly how the actress achieved the look—and what to ask your stylist at home.

What to Ask Your Stylist at the Salon

Schwartz achieved the cocoa-rich brunette by using separate colors for roots, hairline and overall gloss. Starting with a lighter brown color in the front, Schwartz used Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA VIBRANCE to achieve a more natural look. Then, he went in with a slightly darker brown on the roots to the ends to achieve that signature rich and expensive color. Last but not least, Schwartz covered Collins’ entire head with a semi-permanent gloss and sealed it in with Olaplex Bond Multiplier No.1 to give it that extra shine and allow the hair to fade out effortlessly.

When headed to the salon, Schwartz recommends bringing a photo of the color you wish to achieve so your stylist can assess the color and match what would work best with your skin tone. Be sure to ask for a non-permanent color if you want to try a new color without committing to a long-term change.

How to Style the Look

When styling a bob at home, it can be a bit tricky to master after years of long hairdos. Firstly, every good style starts with a good cleanse – celeb stylist Riawna Capri recommends washing and conditioning the hair with a gentle yet hydrating shampoo and conditioner, like R+Co Essential Shampoo and Conditioner.

Next, apply a smoothing agent like Smooth & Seal Blow-Dry Mist as well as Optical Illusion Smoothing Oil to achieve that sleek, smooth and silky finish. When styling, be sure to use a round brush and flat iron to polish the look for a coquette-grunge edge.
