Shopping Cleaning Vacuums I Love to Clean, So I Was Horrified to See How Dirty My Bed Had Been After Using This Mattress Vacuum It picked up so much. Real Simple's Editorial Guidelines Published on August 27, 2024 10:00AM EDT Photo: Real Simple / Madison Woiten I was stunned to learn that changing the bed sheets once a week isn’t enough to keep your bed clean. Shocking, right? According to cleaning experts, semi-regular bed vacuuming is the cleaning habit most of us are not—but should be—doing at least twice a year. And if you struggle with allergies, sleep with pets, or are allergic to dust mites, you should probably be vacuuming your bed more often than that—as frequently as once a month. Still, ever the skeptic, I bought the Jimmy BX5 Pro-120V Corded Mattress Vacuum Cleaner with every intention of returning it. Did I really need to vacuum my bed? OK, fine. If I did, then couldn’t I just use the handheld attachment that comes with my regular stick vacuum? Bed vacuuming seemed too gimmicky to be real, but of course, as a cleaning-obsessed shopping writer, I had to at least give it a go. Now, I’m a full-on bed vacuuming convert. It is truly the key to creating an allergy-proof bedroom, and I sleep better knowing I’m not laying upon a breeding ground of dust mites, bacteria, and viruses. Dust mites, which can trigger asthma and plenty of other diseases, have tiny-but-mighty claws that dig deeply into the fibers of your mattress. So, a “normal” vacuum’s suction isn’t always designed to do the trick. Despite being only 6 pounds, this mattress cleaner has 500 Watts of power and 15 Kpa suction. That’s more than enough to draw out whatever’s lurking deep down in your mattress as well as in your couch, upholstery, and carpet, too. How to Store a Mattress So It Stays Comfortable—and Dust-Free Its powerful UV-C light brightens my vacuuming path ahead while also destroying microorganisms that don’t possess any natural immunity to the ultraviolet light’s wavelength of 100 to 280 nanometers. Just a second of UV-C exposure wipes out mites, viruses, and bacteria, acting as a ruthless germicide. So, even if the suction does leave anything behind, it should get eviscerated by UV-C. Thankfully, the UV-C light feature automatically turns off whenever the vac is tilted off of the mattress, so I never have to worry about unwanted UV light exposure.Of course, I’d be remiss not to point out that this mattress vac would be infinitely more convenient if it was cordless. Actually, you can buy a cordless version, but even while it’s on sale, it’s still $100 more than this corded model. If cordless-ness is that important to you, go for it, but I personally choose to “deal” with the 16-foot long cable while vacuuming my mattress a couple of times a year. So, take it from this staunch believer in bed vacuuming. Once you clean your mattress with the Jimmy BX5 Pro-120V Corded Mattress Vacuum Cleaner and realize how much dust, bacteria, mites, and allergens have been accumulating there, you’ll be converted, too.
