Making the bed is something most of us do every day—or at least we try to. However, there is nothing like slipping into a bed that’s well-made each evening, or even being in the presence of one that’s gorgeously made (especially if your bedroom is also your home office)! It just makes any bedroom feel instantly luxurious without costing a penny.

But many of us opt for a less-than-luxurious bed, because we either find it too difficult to change out our bedding (which should be done once a week), or we’re so busy in the morning that we think we can't find time to do it. However, there are ways to set yourself up for success and eliminate the hassle of this task. Here are eight hacks for making your bed effortlessly.

Opt for Plain White Bedding

No matter the style of the bedroom, it’s impossible to go wrong with classic white bedding. White bedding is available from most brands, in every material at every price point. Best of all, if you spill something or accidentally stain it (it happens), just add some bleach to your laundry cycle and it will look brand new.

Keep Two Sets of the Same Sheets

While you probably have more than one set of sheets anyway, having two identical sets of bedding is ideal—especially if you have kids, pets, eat, or drink in bed. This way, you don’t need to change out all the linens (so much effort) if you spill something on your pillowcase or your pup drools on the top sheet. This will save you time and energy.

Put on Your Duvet the Easy Way

If you feel a little stressed every time you need to put on your duvet cover, know you aren’t alone. However, there is an efficient way to get this task done according to Jessica Hanley, founder and CEO of Piglet in Bed.

“Layer the duvet insert flat on the bed. Then, turn your duvet cover inside out so the top two inside corners are exposed and at the top end of the duvet insert. Attach these corners to the duvet insert using the strings on the inside of the duvet cover—this will stop your duvet insert moving out of position in the night while you move about,” she says.

Then pull both sides of the duvet cover around the insert. Lastly, shake it while holding the top two corners. “Once the duvet insert is in position, you can now attach the bottom two corners using each inner string, and then finish by doing up the buttons.”

If you're frustrated by fussing with buttons, consider having your local tailor sew in a zipper.

Or Skip the Duvet Altogether

If you’re in an extra busy stage of life, it may make more sense to use a comforter instead of a duvet. Getting a decorative comforter that’s machine-washable can save you time, energy, and effort. While it might not have a hotel-like feeling, remember that your home isn’t actually a hotel.

Like a Lived-in Look? Opt for Linen

Linen bedding has been a major trend in recent years for a good reason. Hanley says it has that "lived-in" look, which means you won’t need to make your bed perfectly every morning.

“You don’t need to worry about making it look extremely neat or hotel-like, and instead opt for looser, more relaxed styling. Linen is a wonderful material for this as it’s naturally crinkled, meaning it doesn’t need to be ironed,” she says.

Add Layers

One way to elevate your bed with minimal effort is by adding layers. “Layering is a great way to add coziness, and a wool blanket can also be a great way to introduce a pattern such as a plaid or a gingham, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your bed,” says Hanley.

Better yet, according to Katie Cardullo of bedding company Cozy Earth, layers can make your bed look more expensive.

Don’t Forget Pillows

Pillows are a great way to add style, color, and texture to a bed, even if you have very minimalistic bedding. Cardullo says, “Don't underestimate accent pillows—they are a great addition to your bed without adding more work for you!”

A Simple Bed is Quick to Make

Remember, most of us can make our bed without all the bells and whistles in two minutes or less. Think of this as a minimal time investment with a big reward.

Start by taking off the blankets and pillows and removing any pets (sorry, kitty). Pull the top sheet up, so it isn’t bunching. Then, put on the comforter and align it with the top of the bed or headboard. Check that the sides are even. Put on any pillows and drape a blanket over the foot of the bed. Remember, a bed that isn’t perfectly made is still better than an unmade bed!
