Questions You Might Have How can you make a dog-focused gift more personal? When you think of customization, you might think of adding initials and photos to products. According to Beauchesne, however, you can achieve personalization in many more ways than just putting your dog's name on a water bowl or food mat. “I would start by looking at the type of dog, their age, and their personality, just like we would when buying a gift for a person,” Beauchesne says. “Are they excitable? Maybe they'd benefit from a toy or chew that'll keep them busy. Are they an older, quieter dog? Maybe a dog treat puzzle would help keep their mind stimulated.” Since they make dog toys in every shape and style now, Beauchesne says you can play on the dog's personality with a specific toy for them, or pick something that fits with the dog's or dog owner's home or style. He adds that even choosing a harness that matches the dog’s fur color or a dog ramp that complements the homeowner’s decor can add a nice personal touch. What are unexpected yet useful gifts that would benefit a dog owner? Beauchesne and his dachshund Crusoe are big fans of fun and unique dog puzzles as gifts. “They're such a good way to mentally stimulate them, challenge them, and keep them busy,” he says. “They’re a more interesting gift than the typical toys.” He says that Outward Hound has an especially great selection. In terms of other useful accessories, Beauchesne says a carry bag, dog backpack, dog ramp, life jacket, or car seat are other ideal gifts for safety and convenience. When it comes to gifting dog clothing, Beauchesne advises against it. “Dog clothes can be a fun idea as a gift, but in our experience (from being gifted a lot of clothes), the sizing is very hard to get right,” Beauchesne says. Which pet brands are worth buying a gift card to? “Amazon and Chewy have a lot of the items we mentioned already, but we think it's nice to support other smaller boutique shops or e-commerce sites,” Bseauchesne says. “There's plenty out there to find.” Take Our Word for It This article was written by Jamie Fischer, a commerce writer for Real Simple. To write this article, she researched a variety of dog-focused gifts, including puzzles, custom art, and accessories. To gain expert insight, she spoke to Ryan Beauchesne, founder of DoggoRamps and the human counterpart of Crusoe the Dachshund. Crusoe started as one of the first “animal influencers” back in 2011 with a blog and Facebook page. He eventually published a New York Times bestselling book, and then built a YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram with over seven million total followers.
