You can think of a Bloody Maria as Mary’s zesty, rich sister. They share many of the same ingredients, but the biggest difference is the liquor used, which ultimately changes the foundation of the drink. Bloody Mary’s first came about in 1921, courtesy of French bartender Fernand Petiot at Harry's New York Bar in Paris. They’re traditionally made with vodka, tomato juice, hot sauce, horseradish, and Worcestershire sauce, but these days, they’re completely customizable. The origin story for Bloody Maria’s isn’t as well-known, but tequila lovers will be forever grateful to the mixologist who came up with this spicy brunch beverage alternative. In a Bloody Mary, vodka is used as a subtle base to pair seamlessly with the other ingredients. But a Bloody Maria calls for tequila, which has a savory and robust flavor, helping to enhance the other mixings. And just like with most cocktails, it’s easy to get creative with a Bloody Maria. So, invite your friends over for a delicious brunch and create your own Bloody Maria bar filled with fixings—pickles, olives, jalapeño slices, shrimp, bacon, cucumbers, and lemon wedges are all great options! Ingredients 2 ounces tequila 4 ounces tomato juice 1/2 ounce lemon juice 1/2 tablespoon horseradish 4 dashes worcestershire sauce 2 dashes hot sauce 1 pinch celery salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon tajin Lemon, lime, cucumber, jalapeno peppers, olives (for garnish, optional) Directions Use a lime wedge to coat the rim of the glass. Then, dip the glass rim into a plate of tajin for added flavor. (This step is totally optional. You can also use salt instead of tajin, if preferred.) Add tequila, tomato juice, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt, and black pepper to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 60 to 90 seconds, so all the ingredients are combined. Strain the drink into your glass and garnish with whatever you’d like! Lemon wedges, cucumbers, olives or anything you have on hand – get creative!
