Real Simple's Editorial Guidelines Updated on August 12, 2024 In This Article View All In This Article Reviews FAQs Take Our Word for It Photo: Real Simple / Alli Waataja Shopping for presents is always a challenge, but it's even trickier when you're looking for gifts for new moms. On one hand, you want to get her something practical and functional to help her with the adjustment to parenthood. On the other hand, you want to encourage an overtired new mom to kick back, relax, and rejuvenate. So, we polled experts: moms. We asked our readers for the best gifts they’ve received (or wished they had received) as a first-time mother and rounded up the best options. We also conducted our own research and spoke to Karen Reardanz of Babylist for expert tips on how to shop for new moms. “It’s always nice to get something for a new mom that is for them, not the baby, no matter the season,” Reardanz says. Our readers agree that while “new mom gifts” are often centered around the baby, finding gifts for the mom herself is just as important. “You can’t go wrong with more elevated items that will keep her comfortable or have her feeling pampered while caring for her young baby,” Reardanz says. Real Simple Readers’ Picks For new moms, by new moms. When we polled our readers, they mentioned that a Blue Apron Meal Kit or an UberEats gift card are perfect for giving a helping hand in the kitchen and making mealtime easier. Another great option is the Lollia Bubble Bath for giving new moms a much-needed self-care moment. According to Reardanz, it’s important to keep in mind that a new mom doesn’t always want the same things as before she was a parent. “There are a lot of logistics involved with leaving the house these days,” she says. But you can use your knowledge of her interests to inspire gifts that are more accessible for her. “If she loved the spa, are there sheet face masks or a cooling face roller you could get her that’s easy to use while feeding?” Reardanz says. “Is she a soft cheese aficionado but gave them up during pregnancy? How about a special assortment with some crackers and fruit? Celebrate who she is during this new time of her life.” What can you give a new mom for herself? Elevated loungewear and cozy throw blankets are just two ideas of things you can give to a new mom for herself. “A support pillow or silk pillowcase can be nice during late-night feeding sessions,” Reardanz says. “Food deliveries, like Jeni’s ice cream for a sweet tooth or a hometown favorite from Goldbelly, can be a fun treat.” She also suggests getting her an assortment of teas or a mug that keeps her drinks hot (like the Ember Mug 2). We also love the idea of getting new mothers personalized gifts. “If they’re a jewelry person, a special piece that commemorates their new baby (like a mom bracelet or necklace with baby’s name or initials) is thoughtful,” Reardanz adds. Should you get a new mom gifts for the baby? Reardanz emphasizes that you should only give new moms gifts for the baby if you know they really want or need something. “Like if they’ve said how much they wish they would have gotten a baby carrier to keep their hands free, or their baby doesn’t like the bouncer they got and they wish they could go back and register for a swing so they could have a few moments to themselves,” she says.
