Each year, as the seasons change, style changes along with it. With colder weather approaching, it’s time to break out sweaters, blankets, and all things cozy—like boots to keep us warm as temperatures drop.

“Shoes are the foundation of any outfit, and we've seen people gravitating toward footwear that's practical and sturdy yet still stylish,” says fashion expert Zanna Roberts Rassi. This Fall, we’re seeing shoe trends dominated by classic staples, like loafers and sneakers, as well as some bolder styles, like knee high boots. According to Afterpay, vintage knee high boots and chunky loafers are already skyrocketing in sales in preparation for the colder months. We took a look at the trends and scoured this year’s Fall/Winter runways to round up the most stylish shoes for the upcoming fall season.

The 6 Fall Shoe Trends You'll See Everywhere This Season

Classic Loafers

No matter what year it is, or where you’re going, loafers are always a great choice. These preppy shoes are officially back in trend this fall, though, and will definitely be seen throughout the season. Whether you’re opting for a slim and light style, or a heavier lug-sole with hardware, loafers can elevate every outfit. If you’re looking for a schoolgirl vibe during the back-to-school months, add a pair of crew or knee-high socks to your favorite pair.

Ankle Booties

Ankle boots—or booties—are a tried-and-true autumn shoe, and they’re back in style this season. With seemingly unlimited choices between heeled boots, flat boots, Chelsea boots, and multiple other style options, ankle boots are the perfect complement to every outfit, from casual to dressy. Booties can be easily paired with jeans, dresses, skirts, or dress pants, so you’re on-trend wherever you go.

Knee-High Boots

Despite the unwavering popularity of ankle boots, don’t be afraid to take it up a notch this season with knee-high and over-the-knee boots. Tall boots are trending everywhere this year, and go well with a lot of staple closet pieces. “They pair beautifully and seamlessly with mini dresses and skinny jeans, bringing us right back to the early 2000s,” says stylist Catherine Bibeau. Whether they’re leather or suede, a pair of knee-high boots can add a touch of glamour to your look.

Mary Janes

It’s no question that ballet flats were back in trend this year, and their timeless nature makes them a pragmatic and reliable shoe for year-round style. This fall, step up your basic ballet flat by choosing a Mary Jane, which offers an extra versatile vibe. Mary Janes can be casual and flat, or dressy and demure when they’re heeled, and will look good with just about anything.

Biker Boots

If you’re ready to lean into your edgy side, the fall biker boot trend is definitely for you. Boots in this style are often leather, either black or dark brown in color, and covered in heavy metal hardware. While these heavy shoes can seem a bit daunting to some, they can be styled casually with denim or dressed up for a night out with a matching leather skirt. “The combination of ruggedness with a fashion forward edge is versatile and the perfect addition to both casual and more polished outfits,” says Bibeau. No matter how you wear them, they’ll definitely make a statement.

Comfy Sneakers

Sneakers never go out of style, and when it’s time to put away your sandals for the season, a comfortable pair of sneakers is a necessity. Whether you’re sticking to a pair of classic Nike Air Forces, timeless Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Low Tops, or the cushioned Hoka Bondi 8s, sneakers will continue to be on trend throughout the fall. If you prefer something more festive for fall, you can opt for Cariuma’s plaid canvas sneakers, reminiscent of a cozy flannel. According to Bibeau, vintage-inspired sneakers are also making a comeback this season. “Classic, sleek designs with a modern flair and retro colorways are channeling the 70s and the 80s.”
