For many of us, our freezers are stocked with convenient meals like pizza and chicken nuggets, as well as healthy items like vegetables and fruit. But there’s so much more worth freezing. In fact, if you’ve ever wondered “can I freeze hummus”, the answer is: yes, absolutely.

Hummus is one of those dishes that is incredibly versatile, nutritious, and calls for just a handful of ingredients. And while it may seem like an odd thing to stash in your freezer, homemade and store-bought hummus can last for a few months in the freezer when stored properly. The freezing process is simple and can be done within a few minutes, but there are a few things to know so you can enjoy fresh and nutritious hummus whenever the craving hits.

Can You Freeze Hummus?

Freezing hummus is a great way to have a healthy, delicious, and protein-packed snack option on hand at all times. Whether you are trying to preserve store-bought hummus or one that is homemade, there are a few things you should be aware of so you can enjoy it at its peak. Although you can technically freeze flavored hummus, like roasted red pepper, garlic, or preserved lemon, the flavored varieties may not taste as good once they’ve thawed, so stick to the plain stuff for the best results.

How to Freeze Hummus

Freezing hummus is simple and can be done with things you likely already have at home. The below method works great for both homemade and store-bought options. You can also use a flexible silicone ice tray to freeze hummus; just make sure it has an air-tight lid.

  1. For the best results, spoon plain hummus into an airtight, freezer-friendly food storage container, and pour a small layer of olive oil on top. This helps the hummus retain its moisture.
  2. Place the container into a big plastic bag to prevent any unwanted odors or freezer burn.
  3. Label the container with the date, and enjoy the hummus within four months. We should note that the less time your hummus spends in the freezer, the better it will taste—so be sure not to forget about it!

How to Thaw Hummus

When you’re just about ready to enjoy that hummus you’ve frozen, follow these steps to properly thaw it:

  1. Remove the hummus from the freezer a day before you want to use it, and place it in the refrigerator to thaw. If you need to use the hummus sooner, let it thaw on your counter for a few hours instead.
  2. Once the hummus has completely thawed, mix it well so the oils are evenly distributed, and enjoy.

How To Use Hummus That Has Been Frozen

Once hummus is thawed, it can be used just as before. You can enjoy it as a dip, a sandwich spread, or mix it into sauces, marinades, and dressings. There are countless ways to add hummus to your favorite meals, but nothing beats a classic mezze platter or charcuterie board.

How Long Does Hummus Last?

Frozen hummus can last up to four months in the freezer but if you want to preserve its quality, taste, and texture, it’s best to eat it within two months of freezing. Homemade hummus will last for about four days in the fridge, while opened store-bought hummus can last closer to a week. Unopened store-bought hummus can last up to two months in the fridge with the help of preservatives.
