Every kitchen needs a trash can, but if you want to keep smells at bay and have it blend in with your existing decor, any old trash can won’t do. Freestanding waste bins have become a stylish home addition in recent years, with manufacturers providing many size, shape, and color options. Others even include separate compartments for recycling and compost or have special features, like touchless lids, odor-absorbing pods, proprietary trash bags, and child locks.

To help you find the best trash can for your kitchen, we tested 20 of the most popular options out there and narrowed it down to the top eight. We also spoke with two experts—Craig Hoareau, owner of A Tidy Mind professional organizing and decluttering services in London, and Heidi Solomon, Boston-based professional organizer and interior decorator—about what to look for when shopping for this necessary household item.

What Stands Out
  • It offers effortless hands-free operation, effective odor containment, a secure liner rim, and convenient bag storage.

What Could Be Improved
  • Its slightly wider dimensions may not fit all kitchens, and its price is a little higher than some other standard trash cans.

If you’re after a durable, long-lasting, and truly practical kitchen trash can, the Simplehuman 12-Gallon Rectangular Hands-Free Kitchen Step Trash Can is the gold standard. This model has a durable stainless steel construction with a fingerprint-resistant finish that’s easy to clean and maintain. Its modern and minimal design makes a beautiful edition to any kitchen, as well as a safe pick for our Very Best Products of 2024 list.

In testing, this trash can operated seamlessly with a simple step on the bottom pedal. The lid opened fully, allowing effortless disposal of bulkier items, and the bin was ultra quiet when opening and closing. It was incredibly stable, too, with no rocking or movement during pedal operation. Best yet, it contained odors very well.

As an extra perk, the liner rim secures the bag’s edges, minimizing spills and preventing snags or tears. There’s even a convenient section for storing extra bags, making the replacement process simple and swift. Although it’s on the higher end of the price range, its functionality, durability, and elegant design make it a worthwhile investment. If you need something larger for your household’s trash needs, it also comes in 14.5- and 15.3-gallon options.

Size: 25.8 by 15.9 by 13.3 inches | Capacity: 12 gallons | Material: Stainless steel

What Stands Out
  • It has a soft-closing lid, sleek stainless steel design, and wide opening for easy waste disposal.

What Could Be Improved
  • The lid could bang against the wall with forceful pedal use, and it doesn’t completely contain odors.

The FDW 13-gallon Kitchen Step Trash Can is a chic option that proved to be reliable during testing. Despite the price being a lot lower than some similar units, this trash can has a soft-closing lid and a wide opening that makes disposing of large items a cinch. While it does offer quiet operation, it sometimes makes a small "clunk," but it’s not loud at all.

The pedal is wider and longer than many other kitchen trash cans, giving you more surface area to step on. It worked well throughout the whole testing period, and the lid opened nicely without flinging so far open that it slammed against the wall behind it (unless the foot pedal was stepped on with extreme force). When not full, the can tipped forward ever so slightly when we stepped on the pedal. To mitigate this, we placed a non-slip mat underneath.

This lightweight option has a removable black plastic bin inside, and it fits standard bags. For the most part, the can is smudge- and fingerprint-proof, but it did show a few slight marks. We also noticed that the bag snagged a little on the lid-raising mechanism when we removed it. However, it’s still a great product for folks after a stylish and functional bin on a budget.

Size: 26 by 16 by 14 inches | Capacity: 13 gallons | Material: Stainless steel, polypropylene

What Stands Out
  • Its touchless lid operation, ample 13-gallon capacity, and effective odor containment.

What Could Be Improved
  • There were occasional sensor inconsistencies, and you can’t open it if the batteries run out.

For anyone who wants to avoid touching the trash can altogether, the Ninestars 13-Gallon Automatic Touchless Trash Can offers complete hands-free opening and closing—all you have to do is hold your hand over the sensor. The lid opens quickly and quietly, and it closes softly after around three seconds. There’s a button next to the sensor to manually operate the open and close mechanism, both of which are powered by two D batteries (these are not included).

During testing, we found this unit to be fairly sturdy and well balanced. The opening is large, too, so you can dump items in without having to compress them first. The bin effectively kept odors contained (even from stinky meat trays), although the base isn't leakproof. The sensor is also so sensitive that it would sometimes open the lid when we simply walked by. To avoid this, it would be better placed in an area that doesn’t see much foot traffic.

The plastic inner rim allows you to wrap the top of the bag over it, keeping it hidden and secure. The can’s exterior is brushed steel, and the base and lid are a matte black plastic, which we found was susceptible to greasy smudges. The only thing that we could see being a real problem is that there is no way to open the lid if the batteries are dead. Other than that, it’s a great choice for hands-free bin opening.

Size: 25.04 by 15.24 by 11.22 inches | Capacity: 13 gallons | Material: Stainless steel, plastic

What Stands Out
  • Its fast-acting foot pedal, sleek design with secondary lid for bag concealment, and sturdy and leakproof construction.

What Could Be Improved
  • The foot pedal could be larger, and the plastic material may not appeal to all shoppers.

Offering a more affordable alternative to expensive stainless steel trash cans, the Rubbermaid Premier Series II is impressively stylish for a plastic trash can. It has a minimal all-black look with a modern design. The lid is operated via a foot pedal, and we found this to be very responsive. No particular effort is required; it opens with very little pressure applied and does not fly open uncontrollably if pressed hard.

Once you remove your foot from the pedal, the lid closes slowly and silently, seals completely, and even has a locking mechanism to keep it open if you need (which proved to be very helpful when cooking). The opening is nice and wide and allows for larger boxes to fit inside when folded. There's no removable bin, but there is a secondary lid that allows the edges of the trash bag to be safely affixed and concealed. This easily flips up when it's time to remove it. Taking out a full trash bag is painless, and the can is leakproof.

While this lightweight trash can did show a few smudges, it’s easy to wipe clean. It didn’t retain any odors once the trash had been removed, either. It’s incredibly sturdy and didn’t tip over when we stepped on the pedal or otherwise. We did feel that a wider pedal would have been nice, as this would allow for side access instead of having to be right in front of the bin to use it. It’s priced reasonably, looks nice, and functions as it should, so it’s a win in our books.

Size: 24.1 by 16.1 by 12.7 inches | Capacity: 13 gallons | Material: Plastic/resin and stainless-steel foot pedal

What Stands Out
  • Its compact design, responsive and quiet foot pedal, and soft-closing and silent lid.

What Could Be Improved
  • The odor absorbing pod was not as effective as expected, and you can't get the proprietary trash bags just anywhere.

Ideal for those with substantial kitchen waste but limited space, the Simplehuman 12-Gallon Slim Hands-Free Kitchen Step Trash Can has a width of just over 10 inches to fit in the smallest kitchen nooks. The compact unit has a responsive and quiet foot pedal that needs just a light step to fully open up and a tight-sealing, soft, and silent lid closure that allows you to walk away without it slamming shut behind you.

It’s a sturdy bin that doesn’t give the impression it would tip over—when stepping on the pedal, the bin itself did not move at all. Its stainless steel exterior is resistant to stains and smudges, and the leakproof design securely tucks away the bag’s edges so they stay in place and can’t be seen. It has an easy-to-use and efficient bag installation and removal process, and the bags don't snag at all when inserting or removing them. While it is narrow, it still offers 21.5 inches of depth, so the opening is wide enough to comfortably throw trash in.

There were a couple of downsides. The included odor-absorbing pod (Odorsorb) that sticks to the inside of the trash can wasn’t as effective as we would have liked (we could still smell trash when we opened the lid). The can doesn’t have a removable inner bin, either, and only the SimpleHuman trash bags (which are more expensive than regular ones) fit perfectly. However, you can make do with regular trash bags (that's what we ended up doing). Overall, this space-saving unit is well made and durable, and it allowed us to confidently use one foot to operate it when our hands were full.

Size: 24.4 by 10.2 by 21.5 inches | Capacity: 12 gallons | Material: Stainless steel

What Stands Out
  • Its sturdy and durable construction, hands-free operation, and easy maintenance.

What Could Be Improved
  • Improper bag placement may hinder lid closure.

For added convenience when disposing of waste and cleaning, opt for a kitchen trash can with a removable interior bin. We tested the Amazon Basics Smudge Resistant Rectangular Trash Can and found it to be an easy-to-use, durable, and stylish option. It was sturdy, both when full and empty, and despite being heavy enough to stay in place when opening and closing, it wasn’t difficult to maneuver when needed.

The foot pedal allows you to operate the bin from various angles, which is necessary when your hands are full. The lid rises quickly when you step on the foot pedal and softly seals shut when you release it. You do have to make sure that the trash bag is inserted correctly around the inner bin, otherwise the lid won’t close completely. Its interior removable bin prevents leaks and comes in handy when the trash is too heavy to pull out.

It’s easy to remove and replace a trash bag—simply keep the lid open with your foot, tie up the bag, and pull it out. The can was excellent at containing odors, even particularly pungent ones. Other than a few fingerprints, the exterior proved to be resistant to stains and smudges, and it stayed clean and shiny throughout the testing period. We liked the size and material of this model, which made it simple to reach and clean all areas without any particular extra effort. The price is reasonable, too.

Size: 25.9 by 16.7 by 14.7 inches | Capacity: 13.2 gallons | Material: Stainless steel

What Stands Out
  • Its innovative two-compartment design allows for efficient waste sorting, and it’s great at containing odors.

What Could Be Improved
  • It’s expensive, and there’s limited space for larger items in the recycling compartment.

The practical, functional, and sleek Simplehuman 15.3-Gallon Rectangular Hands-Free Dual Compartment Recycling Kitchen Trash Can will adequately take care of a smaller household’s waste and recycling needs. It has two compartments—one for regular and the other for recycling—to simplify waste sorting and disposal. If you’re unable to hide your trash can, this one is definitely not an eyesore.

When you step on the foot pedal, the top part of the lid lifts up, but there’s an innovative second part that can be manually raised when you have to change the trash bag or empty the recycling. This allows for the trash bags to remain hidden for a neat and tidy appearance. The bin is made from stainless steel, and during testing, we found it to be durable, leakproof, and effective at containing odors. The large foot pedal runs all the way across the bottom, so we could reach it from all angles. It's very responsive and closes softly and slowly.

The blue recycling bin can be pulled out for easy emptying, and replacing bags was effortless. There’s even a built-in trash bag holder that allows you to reach in and grab a bag when you need a new one. Our main gripe with this bin (apart from its high cost) was that the recycling compartment quickly filled up, which hindered the lid from completely closing. The exterior of the trash can is also not resistant to smudges, but it can be easily wiped down and cleaned. The bin requires Simplehuman brand bags for a perfect fit, but you can get by with other options found at your local store.

Size: 25.8 by 22 by 14.2 inches | Capacity: 15.3 gallons | Material: Brushed stainless steel, 100% post-consumer recycled plastic

What Stands Out
  • Its sleek and stylish off-ground design makes it easy to clean underneath, and the removable inner bins allow for efficient waste sorting.

What Could Be Improved
  • It’s quite the investment, and it’s not hands free.

The days of wanting to keep the kitchen trash bin concealed from view will be over once you get yourself the attractive and stylish Brabantia Bo Touch-Top Dual Compartment Recycling Trash Can. This item is pretty enough to keep out on display, comes in various colors to suit all kitchen decor schemes, and is functional to boot.

Its four legs keep it off the floor, making it easy to sweep and mop underneath it, and the lid has a quick-reacting, soft-touch opening mechanism that only needs to be pressed lightly (it will then remain open until you manually push it shut). Once closed, the lid seals tightly so that pets and toddlers can’t get in (although the opening mechanism is simple enough for older children to operate).

The bin features two inner plastic buckets—a larger one for trash and another smaller bin for recycling—which are removable to aid in trash emptying and cleaning. We used the bin with Brabantia’s trash bags and found them to be completely leakproof. They’re also conveniently color coded, so you know exactly what size to get and where to put them. This might be a pricey kitchen trash can, but it’s durable and looks fabulous. Plus, the company offers an impressive 10-year full residential warranty.

Final Verdict

After testing out several kitchen trash cans, our top pick is the Simplehuman 12 Gallon Rectangular Hands-Free Kitchen Step Trash Can. This durable and convenient option offers easy hands-free operation, contains odors like a champ, and has a fingerprint-resistant finish that’s easy to clean and maintain. For a budget-friendly pick, we recommend the FDW 13-Gallon Kitchen Step Trash Can, with a soft-closing lid, sleek stainless steel design, and wide opening for easy disposal.

Our Testing Process

To come up with our list of the best kitchen trash cans, we tested 20 of the most popular models over a two-week period in our own homes. Upon unboxing, we evaluated the overall design, size, and shape of each trash can and its lid. We paid particular attention to the opening and closing mechanism, noting how easy and efficient it was to use from various angles and while our hands were full. We also evaluated any extra included features, such as child and pet locks, soft-closing lids, customizable settings, removable inner bins, and mechanisms to tuck away excess bag edges, recording how responsive, intuitive, effective, and easy to use these were.

We carefully looked at the interior and exterior of each trash can and noted whether a special bag was needed based on its capacity and/or design (if proprietary trash bags were provided, we used those, but if not, we went with store-bought generic). We made note of whether the lid’s opening was large enough to fit bulkier items and if it sealed completely and tightly. When removing and replacing trash bags, we recorded whether the process was quick and efficient, how hard or easy it was to remove a full bag, and if there were areas that could cause the bag to become snagged or torn.

We also checked how sturdy and leakproof each model was and whether its stability was impacted by how full the bag was. We evaluated how effective each unit was at containing odors and how it handled particularly strong or pungent smells. Finally, we tested how easy it was to clean the interior and exterior of each unit, whether there was a stain- or smudge-resistant exterior, and if there were any hard-to-reach spots or crevices that complicated the cleaning process.

How to Shop for Kitchen Trash Cans Like a Pro

Size

Kitchen trash cans are available in an array of different sizes and capacities. They usually range from 20 to 30 inches in height and 10 to 25 inches in width. For capacity, they can hold anywhere from 3 to 30 gallons of waste. A 13-gallon kitchen trash can, like the Rubbermaid Premier Series II (2129978) model, is typically considered standard sized. The size you opt for will depend on your household needs, though. Trash can size is often dictated by where it can be stored and how much trash and/or recycling is generated.

For a single-person household, a trash can with a capacity of around 8 to 10 gallons will often be sufficient for daily waste disposal needs, while a 10- to 13-gallon option will accommodate a couple. For a family of four or more, a trash can with a capacity of 13 to 20 gallons is recommended. Those with a lot of daily waste would need a larger trash can and a separate recycling bin.

“If you cook a lot, having a small kitchen trash can will likely mean that you will have to empty it several times a day,” Hoareau says. “If you don’t spend much time in the kitchen, however, a trash can with a smaller capacity and overall size might be better as it won’t take up as much valuable kitchen space.”

Slim or smaller-volume kitchen trash cans are able to fit into narrower kitchen spaces and pretty much go unnoticed. “These can be tucked out of the way, or even put under the sink,” Solomon says. “If you are diligent in taking the trash and recycling out regularly, or have a trash room in your building, you can get away with a smaller trash can.”

Shape

In addition to varying sizes, kitchen trash cans are also available in many different shapes. These include square, rectangular, cylindrical, and slim. “Square trash cans are often placed against a wall or under a kitchen island, while cylindrical bins can be a space-saving option and tucked in a corner,” Solomon says. “Slim trash cans are the perfect option for tucking between cabinets or furniture as well as in places where there is reduced walkway clearance.”

Material

Kitchen trash cans can be made from metal, plastic, wicker, rattan, wood, or a combination of materials. The most popular options, however, are plastic and stainless steel. Both materials are easy to wipe down when they get dirty. “Stainless steel is great for reducing odors and the spreading of germs,” Solomon says. Plastic, on the other hand, will eventually absorb odor.

Stainless steel trash cans tend to be more expensive than plastic options, but they generally look nicer. They can also visually blend in, match kitchen appliances, and almost disappear. “If your kitchen layout doesn't include a built-in trash can, and the can is visible from other rooms or is centrally located in the kitchen, you may want an option that either blends into your design aesthetic (matches the color or decor scheme) or is neutral, like stainless steel,” Solomon says.

Whatever material you opt for, both Hoareau and Solomon suggest finding a trash can with an interior that can be removed for easier cleaning. “Being able to rinse out the can if something spills helps reduce odors and potential rodent or insect activity,” Solomon says. Hoareau adds that if you go for a metal kitchen trash can, make sure to buy a non-rust model and avoid painted metal trash cans, as the paint could peel or chip over time.

Opening Mechanism

Trash cans for kitchens are available with various different opening mechanisms to suit any need. The most affordable options will be swing-lid and step-pedal options. Swing lids pivot on a hinge and swing open when pushed, then return to a closed position with gravity. “With hinged lids, it's really important that they do not hit the wall when opened,” Solomon says. “If they do, after repeated use they will leave marks or damage the wall long-term.”

Pedal-operated trash cans offer a hands-free way to open the bin and will close automatically once you release the pedal. Touchless sensor kitchen trash cans have also become popular as they provide a hand- and foot-free experience by opening and closing on their own without manual effort on your part. “If you are germaphobe, the touchless cans (like the step pedal options) may be ideal,” Solomon says. They also provide better security against toddlers and pets. Just note that motion sensor bins do require batteries to work and tend to be more expensive than other types of kitchen trash cans.

Other opening options include the traditional manual lift top, a push-button mechanism that swings the lid open (but you’ll have to manually close it), and a slide lid that simply slides open and doesn't need any clearance space. Some bins have lids that stay open at 90 degrees, which, according to Solomon, are extremely helpful when changing bags and taking out the trash. There are also butterfly lids, which have two sides that open up. “These don't run the risk of damaging the walls and they take up much less space,” Solomon says.

Special Features

There are many convenient special features that you could look for in a kitchen trash can. These include a soft-closing lid, odor absorbers, dual compartments, locking lids, and touchless technology. You can also find bins with hidden trash bag storage or dispensers so bags are always within reach.

One non-negotiable feature, as per Solomon, is a soft-closing lid: “Who wants to hear the lid closing every time you use it?” If you have pets or children that you want to deter from getting into the trash, a can with a locking lid may be in order. “The trash cans with motion sensors might also be helpful for younger children who may not be able to open a can on their own, and many can be turned off to prevent unwanted opening or closing,” Solomon says.

Some kitchen trash cans come with dual compartments for waste and recycling, either side by side or one on top of the other. This eliminates the need for extra bins for each different type of waste.

Solomon is not a huge fan of dual-compartment bins because they decrease the size of both the trash and recycling bins. However, she agrees that a dual bin can address two problems in one, even if it’s not ideal space wise. “If you are convenience driven, the dual bin may be the winner, as you only need to go to one area to throw away both trash and recycling,” she says. “It streamlines the cleaning process and may encourage more recycling as it's right there when you throw your trash out.”

It's important to also consider the things that might bother you when using a trash can. “For example, if the bag is frequently falling off the can liner, you may want a trash can that has a grip hole or teeth to hold the bag in place,” Solomon says. If you are sensitive to smells, you might want to avoid plastic cans/lids, or choose one with an odor absorber, like Simplehuman’s Rectangular Hands-Free Kitchen Step Trash Can

For eco-conscious shoppers wanting to decrease their footprint and do their part for the planet, Solomon suggests options like the Brabantia Bo Touch-Top Trash Can, which is 98% recyclable, and the Simplehuman Dual-Compartment Trash Can, which has an interior made from 100% post-consumer recycled material.

More Kitchen Trash Cans to Consider

Glad Stainless Steel Step Trash Can, 13 Gallon: This trash can’s standout feature is the compartment on the back to store trash bags, making for ultra-convenient replacing when it comes time to take out the trash—no need to store your bags in a closet or under the sink. We also loved this trash can for its sleek, modern design. It kept very clean and didn’t give us any issues with collecting fingerprints, smudges, or stains. It also performed well in terms of odor control and its soft-close mechanism.

Rubbermaid Elite Stainless Steel Step-On Trash Can, 12 Gallon: Despite not making it to our list, this option deserves a notable mention—it’s attractive, has a simple yet advanced hands-free foot-pedal opening mechanism, and has a wide opening. The lid closes slowly on its own, it has a stainless steel exterior, and there’s a handy removable internal bucket. It’s sturdy and leakproof, and it even kept most odors locked in, although it struggled with particularly stinky food. A few smudges were visible, but it can be easily wiped clean, with no hard-to-reach spots.

Questions You Might Ask

What size trash can is best for the kitchen?

Hoareau suggests choosing a kitchen trash can that suits both the size of the kitchen and your lifestyle. If you cook every day for a large family, for example, you should avoid smaller trash cans that will fill up quickly and potentially overflow. Those with small kitchens should opt for trash cans with different compartments for recycling and waste, and slim-line options can further help to save space, he says. For the average family, a 13- to 16-gallon capacity should suffice.

Why are kitchen trash cans so expensive?

Although you can find some kitchen trash cans around the $10 to $20 mark, a durable and long-lasting option can cost up to $250 or more. “I would attribute the high cost to the fact that everyone needs it,” Solomon says. “No one wants their home to smell of trash, and no one wants to look at trash. If the trash can has to be visible, it might as well look nice and function well. For that, there is a premium cost.”

However, she says that if you’re looking for a trash can for a temporary residence (think dorm or short-term rental), there’s no need to invest in a very expensive one. The most affordable options are the plain plastic swing-top or step-pedal bins.

Should my kitchen trash can have a lid?

“If it is visible, absolutely,” Solomon says. “If it is inside a cabinet, it's not necessary.” A lid can help contain odors and messes, deter pests (i.e., flies, insects, and rodents), and keep your trash hidden.

Some prefer not to have lids on their kitchen bins to avoid having one extra item to clean and not having to physically touch the bin every time they want to dispose of something (although step pedals and motion-sensor bins solve this issue). If you opt for a bin without a lid, you’ll definitely have to take the trash out at the end of each day.

How long does a kitchen trash can last?

“I would expect a trash can to last at least 10 years,” Solomon says. “The fewer parts [it has], the longer it should last. I would anticipate the electronic/motion sensor cans will have shorter life spans because of the motors. A high-quality step pedal should last a really long time.”
